Blend Modern Trends with Classic Charm by Mixing Old and New Christmas Decor

Sep 26th 2024

From holiday movies to home improvement magazines and news feeds to Instagram and Pinterest, you can’t help but be charmed by new and beautiful Christmas decorations! The temptation to refresh your Christmas decor can be overwhelming.

Maybe you’re smitten by the charm of an updated traditional Christmas theme or the trendy appeal of candy-like holiday decor, but those decorations clash with your current Christmas accessories.

Or maybe you have plenty of Christmas decor you love and want to display, but you can’t resist buying a new piece each year.

Few people have the budget (or even the desire) to overhaul their Christmas decorations every year. However, if you really can’t resist buying a few new pieces, consider these ways to blend them successfully with your existing Christmas decor.

Assess Your Decorations

You probably have a collection of Christmas decorations already, so your first step should be to go through and evaluate them all. Which of your current decorations do you feel compelled to display?

Realistically, some sentimental items may be too shabby to show. However much you love your vintage Christmas decorations, it may be time to part with anything ragged or broken. The fact is, if you choose not to display something this year, you probably won’t set it out next year, either. Consider whether that nostalgic Christmas decoration is worth the storage space.

Find a Common or Complementary Color

Classic Christmas colors return year after year, so a new red and green decoration could blend with your traditional Christmas decorations, even if they’re different styles. By choosing pieces with a common color theme, you can mix old and new decorations and still keep the look cohesive.

To update a classic look, lean into decorations in trendier but complementary Christmas colors For instance, combine your classic red and green Christmas ornaments with newer lime greens. Or add red and white striped ornaments reminiscent of candy canes – another 2024 Christmas decor trend.

Another alternative is to introduce sparkle and texture. Mix traditional red and green with the latest shimmery decorations and on-trend disco ball ornaments. For a cozier, softer look, add yarn and felt ornaments.

Do you adore a blue theme? You’ll love this year’s chinoiserie-inspired ornaments.

Additionally, silver or gold decorations never go out of style and look great with any color Christmas decor.

Create Christmas Groupings

Some Christmas tabletop decorations were made to be displayed together. Think Christmas collections of nutcrackers, snowmen or snow globes, for instance. Or Christmas villages that expand every year. Gingerbread Christmas decor in a variety of styles is just-out-the-oven hot. Gingerbread figures and gingerbread houses can be combined with other decorations for a whimsical, warm and altogether trendy look.

Creating Christmas groupings works for other decorations, too, like vintage ornaments, Christmas candles, Santa mugs and tabletop Christmas trees, including charming foldable honeycomb paper Christmas trees.

Find a New Way to Display

Use your old Christmas tree decorations in new and unexpected ways. Arrange vintage Christmas ornaments you don’t want to risk hanging on the tree in a shadow box, bowl or on a cake stand, where any imperfections add charm or can be hidden. Other containers for Christmas ornament display include clear vases, hurricane lanterns or a vintage jewelry box. Use pretty ribbon to dangle ornaments from chandeliers.

Conversely, larger decorations that normally hang on a wall or sit on a tabletop can be used creatively in the boughs of your Christmas tree, instead.

Do you have a Christmas decoration collection? Gather gingerbread houses, snowmen, nutcrackers, Santa figures or snow village collections on shelves, or even in that odd space above your kitchen cupboards (with twinkly lights!). You also could tuck them onto your staircase, one or two on each tread.

Retro Revival

Some classic Christmas decorations are new again, like vibrant retro ornaments, quaint ceramic-lighted Christmas trees and bottlebrush trees. Revived Christmas decorations may not look exactly like their vintage counterparts, but the juxtaposition between classic and contemporary decor can be equally charming.

Christmas styles evolve over time, so it makes sense to update your Christmas decor occasionally. With a little creativity, you can introduce new pieces and blend them with older Christmas decorations for the perfect mix of trend and tradition.
