Many people remember using an advent calendar to count down the days to Christmas when they were little. But you don’t have to be a child to appreciate these attractive Christmas decorations.

You can still find a cardboard advent calendar with colorful pictures and cut-out windows, similar to ones that first appeared in the mid-1800s. However, these days, advent calendars take many forms. You can find a Christmas advent calendar made out of wood, fabric, metal, resin and other materials.

Advent calendars with pockets or drawers to hide candy or small gifts are extremely popular, especially with families. Children love to open a tiny compartment each evening before bed to find the secret treat hidden inside!

Advent is the season leading up to Christmas. Christians consider the advent season as a way to prepare both physically and spiritually for the birth of the savior. But even the non-religious who celebrate Christmas enjoy using advent calendars to mark the days leading toward a joyous holiday.

Advent calendars typically have drawers or doors numbered 1 to 24. Each number signifies a day in December preceding Christmas Day, from December 1 through December 24, Christmas Eve. Other countdown calendars may utilize a marker or dial to indicate a progression through the holiday season.

Most Christmas advent calendars are decorative and festive representations of winter and holiday symbols, including Christmas trees, Christmas trains, snowmen, stockings and gingerbread houses. You can find traditional styles, as well as advent calendars that blend well with modern decor.

If you haven’t looked at advent calendars in a while, maybe it’s time to check out our colorful and whimsical variety and begin your own advent calendar tradition this year!
