Decorate Your Christmas Tree In 6 Simple Steps

Nov 16th 2020

For many, the most enjoyable part of the holiday season is decorating the Christmas tree. Quality family time is spent putting Christmas ornaments and lights on the tree. If you need a little help decorating that perfect tree for your home, we have you covered! Let us guide you through the basics of making a beautiful tree.

Setting Up Your Christmas Tree

Step 1: Set Up Your Tree

Your Christmas tree is the focal point of your home for the holidays. When searching for a location, make sure it will be visible from various spots throughout the room while also remaining removed from pathways. Once you pick that perfect spot, place it in the stand. Many artificial trees come with a tree stand included. We carry a selection of tree stands for both artificial and live trees. Our live tree stands even come with an easy watering feature, saving you time and hassle. Then, don’t forget to fluff your artificial Christmas tree! If you’re not sure how to fluff your tree for the best results, we have you covered with our How To video here. This takes time, but it will give you the full look you need before you decorate.

Christmas Tree Lights

Step 2: Christmas Lights

If you don't have a pre-lit Christmas tree, make sure you test your Christmas lights first. Plug each strand of lights into an outlet and check for burnt-out bulbs. Replace any dead bulbs and make sure no cords are damaged. Please see our safety guide for more tips on lighting.

Who says you only have to use one type of light on your Christmas tree? It’s your tree so get as creative as you want. Mix and match different types of lights, especially traditional mini lights with novelty lights. It’s a beautiful combination that won’t go unnoticed. If you are using any themed lights or novelty lights, be sure to put them on after the mini lights and evenly space them apart.

After you've made sure that all of your lights are working, string them on your tree starting from the top down. Weave the lights along the branches 'inside,' then move to the outer edges. If you have a lit tree topper, make sure that you leave the socket end of the lights at the top of the tree to plug it in.

Christmas Tree Topper

Step 3: The Tree Toppers

One of the iconic decorations on your Christmas tree is the tree topper. While the majority of people enjoy using angels and stars as their tree topper, it can be fun to try a unique approach. Let Santa Claus spread holiday cheer from the top of your tree or try a finial topper. If you want to bring an elegant touch to your tree, choose a pre-lit tree topper to brighten up your Christmas tree. With a variety of lighting options, you can find the perfect one for your tree!

If your tree topper is electric, make sure to plug it into the socket end of the lights that you left open at the top of your tree. It’s important to know that your tree topper doesn’t have to always go at the top of your tree. You can put it off to the side or consider folding down the top branch to make room for your tree topper.

Step 4: The Garland

With garland, it's best to start at the top and work your way down in a spiral pattern going around the tree. Gently-swagged garland looks more graceful than straight or diagonal lines across the tree. Deeply swagged garland is beautiful, but can only be used on large trees with open space between branches. You can also place your garland vertically. Just attach it to the top of your tree with twine (behind the tree topper) then loop it down vertically. Be sure to add some twists and turns, wiring to branches if necessary, in order to add graceful curves.

If you want to get creative, you can cut beaded garland into different lengths and use it as tinsel to drape over branches. Be sure that the garland is knotted to keep the beads from falling off.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

Step 5: The Ornaments

Now that you’ve placed your tree in the perfect spot and added your favorite lights and garland, it’s time for those ornaments. How many ornaments should you use? Each Christmas tree is different, so make it unique to your family. Whether you’re adding a few elegant ornaments or a lot of memorable ones, your personal taste will tell you when you have enough.

While there isn’t a set number for ornaments, we can provide you with a guideline. For trees under 9 feet, we recommend using 10-15 standard size ornaments per foot. If your tree is 9 feet or taller, we recommend 12-20 ornaments per foot. To get the best results, try using a variety of different sized ornaments throughout your tree.

Make your Christmas tree stand out by hanging those memorable ornaments first. These are ones that represent who you and your family are, so showcase them first. Next, hang any larger ornaments you have evenly apart. You will then want to fill in the spaces with any medium and small sizes to balance the overall look of the tree.

If you have pets or small children, try placing shatterproof ornaments near the bottom or in high-traffic areas.

Christmas Tree Skirt

Step 6: The Tree Skirt

A great way to add a decorative touch to your Christmas tree is by placing a tree skirt at the base of your tree. They are an easy and simple way to add character to your holiday display while hiding the base of your Christmas tree. Tree skirts come in a wide variety of styles, from solid, colored velvet to patterns to little scenes involving carolers or snowmen. Make sure your skirt is wide enough to cover the tree stand but does not extend past the bottom branches. Consider the size requirements, color scheme, and the theme your tree may have.

Everyone enjoys adding their favorite ornaments, lights, and garland to the tree. However, why stop there? Grab the attention of your guests by placing small tabletop decorations on your tree. If your Christmas tree is inspired by a specific theme, adding decorations like these can enhance the look of your tree. For example, capture that blue Christmas look by properly securing adorable light blue gnomes on your tree. Let your imagination run free, and don't be afraid to experiment!

There you go! You now have a beautifully decorated Christmas tree that will spread Christmas cheer throughout your home. Consider adding a few presents or empty decorated boxes under the tree for that complete Christmas look. When the Christmas season comes to an end, it’s important to properly store your tree.
