Take Time to Fluff: Easy Tips for More Beautiful Christmas Wreaths and Garland
Nov 4th 2024
If you’ve just bought a new Christmas wreath or pulled your old garland out of storage, your decoration can range from a bit crumpled to completely compacted. Is that how you want to hang it up? Of course not!
For artificial Christmas wreaths and garlands to look their best, as well as tinsel decorations that structurally resemble pine branches, generally need some attention before hanging. Professionals refer to this process as “fluffing” and it does wonders to improve the look of your decoration.
Fortunately, shaping a Christmas garland or wreath isn’t hard. All it takes is a little time and patience.
Let’s review some easy steps.
How to Fluff Garland and Wreaths
Lay your decoration on the floor, or on a large table or workbench. Stretch garlands out to their full length. Make sure the wreath form is not twisted or bent.
If your decoration has lights, plug them in. Adjust the position of the lights and check for any burned-out bulbs as you go.
For garland: Starting at one end, pull each branch up and away from the center, keeping tips consistently aimed toward the “bottom” end of the garland.
For wreaths: Start at one side and pull branches at angles out and away from the wreath form. You’ll achieve the most natural look if branch tips consistently face the same direction (clockwise or counterclockwise).
Wear plastic gloves or gardening gloves to protect your hands from prickly branch tips.
When you’re finished, stand back and evaluate the effect. Reposition branches as needed.
If you add decorations to your wreath or garland, you may need to make additional adjustments.
Similarly, artificial wreaths and garlands can become mussed during the installation process, so tweak branch positions a final time once the item is hung.
Christmas wreaths and garlands are classic decorations that provide beauty inside and outside your home. Taking a few minutes to get your decorations into shape ensures they appear to their greatest advantage.
