Giant Santas and Oversized Ornaments: Why Big Christmas Decorations are Trending
Aug 7th 2024
If you’re like most Americans, you’ll probably put up Christmas decorations this year. According to one Statista survey, 82% of Americans decorate for Christmas. Furthermore, up to 7 in 10 households display outdoor decorations.
Over the past few years, not only has the popularity of Christmas lawn decorations grown – so have the decorations themselves! Large Christmas decorations, from life-size nutcrackers to oversized ornaments to 20 foot inflatable figures, are turning yards into giant Christmas showcases.
Why Do We Decorate for Christmas?
Decorating for Christmas used to be a much simpler affair. For centuries, Christmas decorations were limited to displays of greenery, like pine boughs and mistletoe. Since these natural materials dried out quickly, they were brought indoors just days before the holiday and likely were removed soon afterward.
Christmas trees became a German tradition in the 16th century, but caught on elsewhere when Britain’s Queen Victoria displayed one in her palace. German immigrants brought the custom to the United States.
It wasn’t until the late 1800s that decorating for Christmas really caught on, thanks in large part to American merchandising. Stores like Woolworth’s, Montgomery Ward and Macy’s, and branded products like Coca-Cola, were instrumental in shaping the holiday.
Big Christmas Decorations are Big News
In these days of online shopping, store holiday window displays are hard to find, but the interest in home holiday decorating is bigger than ever. We place wreaths on doors, windows and walls, garland and lights on eaves and stair railings. Families may even have more than one Christmas tree.
Why Use Large Christmas Decorations?
There are a few reasons why giant Christmas decorations are so popular. There's no denying that towering inflatables and oversized wreaths really grab attention, expressing an abundant exuberance for the season. Who doesn’t slow down for a good look when they pass an elaborately decorated home?
However, huge Christmas decorations have made headway indoors, too. Today’s larger homes require substantially-sized Christmas decorations that are proportionate to the scale of the room. A 6 or 7-foot Christmas tree would look tiny in a foyer or family room with a cathedral ceiling, while a Christmas tree that’s roughly double the size looks more visually appropriate.
Large Christmas decor is one of the easiest ways to make a statement. This year, Christmas Central is embracing big Christmas decorations in a big way.
