Create the Perfect Valentine’s Vibes with These Home Decor Tips
Jan 17th 2025
By mid-February, the dreariness of winter hits in full force. That’s probably why so many people get excited about celebrating and decorating for Valentine’s Day, a popular mid-winter holiday.
Whether you’re a Valentine’s Day lover or simply tolerate the holiday, there’s no denying that red hearts, pink garland and other valentine decorations bring a much-needed injection of cheer and color to our winter-weary world.
Fortunately, there is a range of Valentines Day decorations to help dispel your winter blues, no matter your level of interest in the holiday. Valentine looks range from hints of neutral-toned hearts sprinkled into your decor, to an all-out romantic approach to decorating. Depending on your style, there are ways to introduce a touch of quirky valentine decor to your rooms, or to keep all your cheerful valentine decor outdoors.
For your consideration, Christmas Central focuses on four different ways to put a little love into your home decor.
Romancing Your Rooms
The traditional “hearts and flowers” Valentines Day vibe is alive and well and can be enhanced by a number of classic valentines decorations. Carry out a soft and warm aesthetic through the choices you make in your decor.
For many people, flowers say romance. According to the Society of American Florists, Valentine’s Day is the number one holiday for florists and floral purchases, with about 250 million roses sold on Valentine’s Day. But roses aren’t the only flowers purchased for Valentine’s Day – sales of all flowers and plants receive a boost in mid-February.
Consider purchasing artificial flowers and plants for long-lasting blooms and greenery. You can buy a bouquet of silk roses that will always stay fresh-looking, as well as beautiful lush house plants that require no watering or maintenance. For an extra romantic touch, choose plants with heart-shaped leaves, like pothos, philodendron or peperomia.
Set the scene for a romantic evening with Valentines Day decor that suits the mood. Light some candles, especially scented candles, for additional atmosphere. If your candles will be located near upholstery or bedding, consider flameless candles for safety’s sake.
To further the romantic mood, say “I love you” in full color with decor elements in rich reds or soft pinks. Toss in some pillows in sensuous materials like satin or velvet, or pillow covers decorated with soft watercolor-style designs. Add a warm blanket for snuggling.
Is a romantic private meal part of your Valentine’s Day plan? Decorate the table and surrounding area with gauzy fabric, sheer ribbons, and sweet microlights in warm white or pink.
Playful and Flirty
Maybe you’re the type who doesn’t take Valentine’s Day too seriously. If you’re looking for Valentine's Day decorations with exuberance and energy, lean into fun, brightly colored decor.
One way to create a valentine look that’s whimsical and playful is by hanging garland down the stair rail, around the fireplace and doorways. A lighthearted Valentine’s Day vibe gives you license to be creative! Loop garlands along the tops of your kitchen cabinets, around your buffet, mirrors and down the center of a serving table. A few fun choices include shiny, vibrant pink beaded garland or iridescent garland with a pink sheen.
Utilize lighted Valentine’s Day decorations for an even brighter take on the holiday! Hang heart-shaped silhouettes and lighted wall signs around the house. Choose a cheery combination of red, white, pink and purple string lights or mini heart novelty lights to really get the celebration glowing.
Table linens are a cute and easy way to make the day feel a little less ordinary for you, the kids or someone special. Set the table with a heart-strewn tablecloth, table runner and placemats, and get out a few fresh pink kitchen towels.
Some fans of this holiday of love even decorate a Valentines Day tree! Start with a white, pink or red tinsel Christmas tree. Add your own ornaments (red, white and pink glass balls work well!) or have the kids cut out colorful paper hearts.
Around the house, add a few whimsical Valentine’s Day gnomes, balloons, heart shaped wreaths and other decorations to complete your happy Valentine’s Day vibe.
Subtle and Serene
Some people prefer a more subdued decor, even when it comes to the holidays. That doesn’t mean you can’t decorate for Valentine’s Day; it just requires a light hand.
Fortunately, there are ways to add a little love to a neutral decor and even insert a tint of color. Tones like white, cream, beige and gray pair well with a sprinkling of pale pink and even light blue or lavender valentine decor, colors that also transition well into Easter and spring. For additional visual interest, introduce textural and sculptural items in wood, woven materials and stone.
A cream-colored blanket of woven hearts, for instance, blends naturally into a neutral decor while subtly hinting at the holiday. Heart-shaped bowls made of light-colored wood, or a gray and white pillow with a simple heart motif, also give quiet nods to Valentine’s Day.
You can even mix in warm white mini lights or candles. Place your candles in wooden candle holders to maintain a look that’s tasteful and understated but still natural.
Heartfelt Greetings at the Door
Some of the Valentine's Day decorations that are easiest to use are those designed to greet guests and neighbors. Homeowners continue to seek new ways to personalize their homes, including outdoor decorating for smaller holidays throughout the year. These days, you can find everything from heart and love-themed doormats to inflatable valentine decorations to brighten your home’s exterior.
Remember a few months ago, when Christmas lights brightened the neighborhood? February nights are still long, and strings of warm white, red and white or pink lights on your porch eaves and around your windows would really perk things up. Start a trend in your neighborhood by hanging Valentines Day lights!
If hanging outdoor lights isn’t practical for you, consider other types of lighted Valentine’s Day decorations. For instance, silhouette style lighted window decorations typically are hung indoors to be viewed from the outside.
Prop a porch sign with welcoming hearts by the front door. Put a valentine wreath on the door and hang a Valentine’s Day house flag or garden flag to brighten up a dormant flowerbed.
Just a little pop of pink or red on the outside of your home can lift your spirits and spread positive vibes to visitors and neighbors.
Uplifting Accessories
Set smack in the middle of winter, it’s easy to overlook a minor holiday like Valentine’s Day. Dreary weather and uncertain times may dampen your enthusiasm for a day that’s all about love and friendship.
But those may be the same reasons why Valentine’s Day is worth celebrating. If a few whimsical pink and red decorations can boost your mood, then why not encourage a little mid-winter pick-me-up with a couple of special home accessories?
If you’re having a hard time finding cheer in the world, at least you can create some in your small corner of it.
