Meet the Gonks: Christmas Gnomes' Nordic Cousins

Gonks have existed in Scandinavian folklore for centuries. They are said to live in farmhouses or barns, protecting and bringing good fortune to the family that lives there. However, if the family disrespects them or the land, gonks are likely to become angry and play nasty tricks.

Like gnomes, gonks are characterized by their small stature and long, white beards. Unlike gnomes, however, a gonk’s facial features are virtually hidden, with only a bulbous nose peeking out beneath the brim of a stocking cap.

Similar to the custom of leaving cookies for St. Nicholas, it is a Scandinavian winter solstice tradition to set a bowl of porridge on the doorstep, so the gonks can join in the seasonal celebration. This practice may have led to the gonks’ association with Christmas.

Christmas gnomes and gonks can be found on tables, mantels and bookshelves. Gnome ornaments are at home in Christmas trees. You might also find a gnome on signs, tableware and other Christmas decorations.
