Meet the Gonks: Christmas Gnomes' Nordic Cousins
Dec 15th 2023
Now, there are even more gnome-like creatures to love as they are joined by their Scandinavian counterparts, the gonks.
What is a Gonk?
Like gnomes, gonks are characterized by their small stature and long, white beards. Unlike gnomes, however, a gonk’s facial features are virtually hidden, with only a bulbous nose peeking out beneath the brim of a stocking cap.
Similar to the custom of leaving cookies for St. Nicholas, it is a Scandinavian winter solstice tradition to set a bowl of porridge on the doorstep, so the gonks can join in the seasonal celebration. This practice may have led to the gonks’ association with Christmas.
Where to Display a Christmas Gnome or Gonk
Because Christmas gnome decor is relatively inexpensive, they make great gifts. Their low cost and variety in design make it easy to start or add to a gnome collection.
You can satisfy your fascination with Christmas gnomes and gonks with smaller sized gnome Christmas ornaments, as well as beanbag style gnome tabletop decorations and free-standing gnome figures.
