Spring Cleaning Your Pool and Spa: How to Get Rid of Winter Debris

Warmer weather brings with it several chores as we prepare for a summer spent outside on our porches and patios, in our yards and swimming pools. If you have a pool or spa, they also deserve a spring cleaning to get them ready to use.

Remove Debris

Before you begin cleaning the pool or spa itself, pick up the leaves, branches and other debris that have accumulated in the area and on your cover. This is a good start to improving the look of your yard that also has a practical purpose. All that debris could potentially clog your filters and foul your pool or spa water.

Remove the cover and clean off anything floating on the water’s surface with a pool skimmer. Use your pool vacuum to remove anything that has sunk to the bottom.

Clean the Surfaces

Now it’s time to clean the pool and spa surfaces and remove the winter build-up of dirt and algae. Use your pool brush to scrub grime from the pool or spa’s walls and floors.

The shell of your spa or hot tub also should be scrubbed and possibly waxed.

Check Your Equipment

Finally, check the pool pump, filter and heater to ensure that they are functioning properly. Be sure to address any problems before the swim season begins.

Test Water Chemistry

Before you enjoy any swimming or soaking, it's important to check the water chemistry to ensure it is balanced and safe for use. You can use a water testing kit to check the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels in your pool and spa water. If any of these levels are off, you may need to add chemicals to balance them out.

Spring cleaning your pool and spa hot tub is an important task that will ensure your outdoor space is clean and safe and ready for summer fun. By removing debris, cleaning the surfaces, balancing the water chemistry and inspecting your equipment, you can get your pool and spa ready for the upcoming swim season.
